Dr. Ralph Latteck

Scientist

Radar Remote Sensing

Dr. Ralph Latteck studied at the University of Rostock and has spent much of his career at the Leibniz Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP) in Kühlungsborn, Germany, where he is a senior scientist in radar remote sensing. He is internationally recognized for his contributions to atmospheric radar science and the investigation of the polar middle atmosphere.

He serves as Principal Investigator of the MAARSY radar in northern Norway and the MMARIA/SIMONe Norway system, and is Co-Principal Investigator of the LoLa MLT radar project at low latitudes. Dr. Latteck has played a central role in the development and scientific exploitation of MAARSY, one of the world’s most advanced atmospheric radar systems for studies of the mesosphere and lower thermosphere.

Beyond his scientific work, he has contributed extensively to the international radar and radio science community. He chaired the MST16 Workshop in Rostock, serves as Germany’s representative to URSI Commission G, and is Chair of the URSI-Germany Meeting 2026. He has also co-organized numerous international MST workshops and conferences.

His research focuses on radar observations in northern Norway using systems such as MAARSY and SIMONe, with emphasis on polar middle atmosphere dynamics, atmospheric variability, and long-term trends in Polar Mesospheric Echoes (summer and winter).
