Prof. Jorge Chau is a Professor at the University of Rostock and Head of the Radar Remote Sensing Department at the Leibniz Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP) in Kühlungsborn, Germany. He received his M.Sc. (1995) and Ph.D. (1998) in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder, USA.
With nearly three decades of experience, Prof. Chau has made significant contributions to radar and radio science. From 2001 to 2012, he served as Director of the Jicamarca Radio Observatory in Lima, Peru, where he advanced radio science techniques and conducted research in aeronomy, ionospheric instabilities, and meteor physics.
Since joining IAP in 2013, his work has focused on radar remote sensing of the mesosphere, lower thermosphere, and ionosphere. His research includes the development of advanced radar imaging techniques for two- and three-dimensional atmospheric and ionospheric studies, innovative methods for wind field estimation using multistatic specular meteor radars, and investigations of non-specular meteor trails and high-latitude E-region irregularities. More recently, his research has focused on understanding dynamics in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere across a wide range of scales, from planetary to sub-mesoscales.
His broader research interests include atmospheric–ionospheric coupling processes, contributing to a better understanding of interactions between these regions. He is the recipient of the CEDAR Prize Lecture (2013) and was named a SCOSTEP Fellow in 2025.
