Qian Wu (NCAR, USA) Upper Atmosphere Observation in NCAR

Qian Wu (NCAR, USA) will deliver a talk on the topic "Upper Atmosphere Observation in NCAR".

Abstract:

Over 25 years, NCAR has been providing upper atmosphere observations to the aernonmy community. NCAR was a provider of NASA TIMED TIDI mesospheric and lower thermospheric wind observation.  The observations have been used widely by the community.    The TIDI data played a key role in the vertical coupling research and was also used to drive first principle model such as TIEGCM achieving very satisfying results.    NCAR is also a leading developer and operator of ground base FPI (Fabry Perot interferometer) with over 10 have been built and deployed around the world providing thermospheric and mesospheric winds.   NCAR is the first to develop a balloon borne FPI (HIWIND) to observe both day and night thermospheric wind revealing many unknow features in the thermospheric dynamics to help further improve NCAR models.    More recently, NCAR is building a CubeSat borne FPI called WindCube to observe thermospheric winds from a polar orbit.   CubeSat wind instrument is much cheaper and can fill in the gap between major space missions for wind coverage.   A collaboration between NCAR and COSMIC program is developing thermospheric density data from the COSMIC 2 thermospheric density using the GNSS POD data.   NCAR will continue its observational program to support the community.
