Rabiu Babatunde (United Nations African Regional Centre for Space Science and Technology Education) Space Weather observation and research in Africa

Rabiu Babatunde (United Nations African Regional Centre for Space Science and Technology Education) wird auf unserem IAP-Kolloquium einen Vortrag zum Thema "Space Weather observation and research in Africa" halten.

Zusammenfassung:

Space Weather studies has become a global field of interest and Africa is in the mainstream of the scientific exercise. This paper presented existing space weather monitoring infrastructure in Africa. A couple of concerted efforts has led to the deployment to Africa of multiple instruments such as Magnetometers, GNSS receivers, Optical Imagers, Fabry Perot Interferometer, HF Radars, digisonde,  etc. Some scientific results are also presented. There is growing interest in different aspects of space weather studies in Africa and availability of instrumentation is a major determinant in choice of filled of interest and career development by scientists. The paper presented prospects of setting up a network of meteor radars in Africa. There is optimum size of experts in atmospheric and space weather studies in Africa, this is evident in their publications and research output. The need for deployment of research facilities for development of such studies is further emphasized. The United Nations African Regional Centre for Space Science and Technology Education - English, UN-ARCSSTE-E, located n Nigeria is ready to partner with any donor agencies in setting up such research/observational network in Africa.
