Pilot-LEWIZ - Pilot campaign
Scientific Goals
- To observe inertia-gravity wave during a Rossby wave breaking event with radiosondes and VHF radar
- To diagnose inertia-wave properties from a joint data analysis
- To develop a conceptual model for the generation of inertia-gravity waves in the tropospheric jet
Organisation
- Principle investigator: Dieter H.W. Peters
- Contributors: Peter Hoffmann, Matthias Alpers & the LEWIZ team
- Runtime: December 1999 - December 2000
- Funding: IAP
Activities
- Field campaign in Kühlungsborn from 17 to 19 December 1999 including radiosondes and VHF radar (LEWIZ-K1) accompanied with analysis and simulation data
Results
- inertia-gravity waves were successfully sampled with 3-hourly launched radiosondes and VHF radar in tropospheric mode
- inertia-gravity wave properties were analysed using Hovmoeller plots, rotary spectra and the Doppler shift between intrinisic frequency (from the radiosonde) and aparant frequency (from the radar)

Hovmöller diagrams for zonal wind fluctuations from (Fig. 1) radiosondes and (Fig. 2) VHF radar. The different inclination of the phase lines is an effect of the Doppler shift - while the radiosonde moves with the basic stream, the radar is fixed in space.
- a conceptual model was developed describing inertia-gravity wave packets propagating upstream and away from the tropospheric jet which could be identified as the energy source

- The MM5 model was used to simulate inertia-gravity waves with near-realistic amplitudes and to develop a scale-independent diagnosis of their sources.
