Dr. Robert Reichert (DLR) Mountain Waves over Tierra del Fuego - A Characterization Using Rayleigh Lidar Measurements

Dr. Robert Reichert (DLR) will deliver a talk on the topic, "Mountain Waves over Tierra del Fuego - A Characterization Using Rayleigh Lidar Measurements" in IAP colloquium.
His study and presentation will focus on how the Internal atmospheric gravity waves have been observed by the CORAL lidar in the lee of the southern Andes since 2017. This region is known for the occurrence of mountain waves with very large amplitudes, so that in this context one also speaks of the global gravity wave hotspot. Robert Reichert has evaluated the three-year data set in his PhD thesis and successfully defended in March this year. In the colloquium he will present some of the most important results from his PhD thesis. One of the topics will be how he filtered the diurnal tide from the lidar nighttime measurements and defined individual wave packets using a cluster algorithm. He also explored the question of how modeled forcing and propagation conditions relate to measured wave energies.
