The particle detector an instrument developed and built at the IAP. It is based like ECOMA instrument on the classical Faraday cup principle. A shielded electrode is used to measure charged aerosols. The measured quantity is the current generated by incident charges, which is directly proportional to the particle charge density. The shielding grid can also be used to determine further plasma parameters such as ion density. From both quantities, small-scale structures can also be examined.
