Prof. Erdal Yiğit (George Mason University, USA) Modeling and observation of vertical coupling induced by waves in terrestrial whole atmospheres
Prof. Erdal Yiğit (George Mason University, USA) will deliver a talk at the IAP colloquium on15th August at 15:00 on the topic, "Modeling and observation of vertical coupling induced by waves in terrestrial whole atmospheres".
Earth’s whole atmosphere system is populated by a broad spectrum of waves originating primarily in the lower and middle atmosphere and propagating upward. At higher altitudes these waves produce global effects that can be measured. A suite of observational techniques is used to characterize the mean behavior of the atmosphere and the variability produced by these waves. In this talk, he will focus on the recent progress in global scale modeling of vertical coupling by gravity waves, using the Coupled Middle Atmosphere Thermosphere Model-2 and a subgrid-scale gravity wave parameterization. He will present thermospheric neutral wind variations observed by NASA’s ICON satellite. ICON observations provide a detailed view of the mean and variable structure of Earth’s thermosphere. Comparison with other terrestrial atmospheres leads to new insight into the nature of wave-induced variability and effects.
